Pre-Symposium Announcements Mon 18 Mar 2024

Thank you for registering for the 2024 SIGCSE Technical Symposium. We look forward to seeing you in Portland or online next week! This message contains a variety of announcements and reminders that we hope you will find helpful as you travel to and attend the symposium. Before heading to Portland, please take a few minutes to read them.

Onsite Logistics

  • Access to the convention center is through the Martin Luther King Jr. entrance at Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and NE Oregon St. It isn’t possible to enter the building at its north end near the Hyatt and Convention Center light rail station. Please head south a short distance along Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to reach the main entrance.
  • Free wifi will be available throughout the Oregon Convention Center for the duration of the symposium. The SSID is SIGCSE. The password is sigcse2024.
  • Student volunteers will wear bright blue T-shirts with the conference logo on the front and “Volunteer in Portland” on the back. Please approach these volunteers if you have questions or need directions.
  • Morning Coffee ahead of the plenary sessions will be available for purchase in the convention center at the Portland Roasting location near registration, and from a pop-up shop just outside the Portland Ballroom. You are also welcome to pick up coffee on your way to the convention center from your favorite local shop or national chain and bring it with you.
  • Is your institution hiring? There will be a poster board near registration where job ads can be posted – please bring a printed copy of your job ad. Looking for a job? Be sure to peruse what has been posted.

Program Schedule and Proceedings

  • Registration opens at noon on Wednesday and is open all day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday so that you can pick up your conference badge and other registration materials.
  • Wednesday’s schedule is filled with affiliated events and workshops. These events are open to all attendees but require advance registration. Links to sign up for affiliated events can be found in the conference program: SIGCSE TS Affiliated Events. The workshop schedule can be found here: SIGCSE TS Workshops. You can sign up for a workshop and pay the fee associated with such by modifying your conference registration in the online registration system.
  • All of the papers that are being presented at this year’s symposium are now in the ACM digital library. Links to the papers have been added to the online program to help you easily find the papers that are being presented in each session.

Conference App and Online Program

  • You can mark sessions that are of interest to you in the conference program on the website by clicking on the small star icon next to the session title. The sessions that you have marked can be viewed by selecting “Your Program” in the Program menu or by selecting the appropriate program filter options.
  • This year’s conference app and online platform is Whova. If you opted in to the online platform during the registration process you will receive a message in the next couple of days (if you haven’t already received it) with additional information about the app and the login information you need to access it.

Portland & Travel

  • Are you arriving by air? Portland’s light rail transit system connects the airport to the convention center. The fare is $2.80 (tickets can be purchased from machines at the airport station) and the trip from the airport to the convention center takes about half an hour. If you are staying at the Hyatt or the Marriott you’ll want to get off the train at Convention Center station. If you are staying at the Double Tree you’ll want to get off the train at Lloyd Center / NE 11th Ave station.
  • The weather forecast for Portland next week currently includes some showers, and temperatures that some may perceive as quite cold. Please check the weather forecast before you leave and pack appropriately. It is necessary to go outside to reach the Oregon Convention Center from all of the conference hotels.
  • Are you interested in exploring Portland? Free Portland transit passes are available for pickup at the registration desk for the first 1,500 people. Portland Tourism will have a booth in the MLK lobby on Thursday and Friday with representatives who can provide suggestions for where to eat, attractions to see, and how to get to them.

We look forward to seeing you next week, either in Portland or online.
